We Get Letters, Boy
I wrote a piece a month or so ago right in this very space, a look at the new group I call Generation Broke. TM Please visit/revisit it here. The musing was plucked from a book I’ve got coming April 11 called 2011–about the future–from McGraw-Hill. I was amazed that the posting prodded people to write me in droves. Letters, posts, and a bunch a serious f**k yous to boot! I want to share some with you in the guise of a column. Call me lazy, call me Richard. But read on…. “I am 22 years old, and am working to become the exception to your rule. I graduated high school in 2002, and immediately enlisted in the United States Navy. I believe that if the people of Gen-B could have the discipline and sense of honor that the military instills, the American workforce would witness a marked change in attitude. I is one thing missing from your article. The role-models and examples of greatness in our world have changed since Gen-X. Whereas Gen-X looked up to barons like Warren Buffett, and emulated the fictional characters of Gordon Gekko, Gen-B is left with media whores like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.” “Just read your piece about “Generation Broke.” You nailed it. I am a copywriter at Ogilvy here in NY and I see it every day. As a matter of fact, I had been trying to come up with a title for this generation, but I don’t think I can top yours. I sincerely hope that the generation behind this one endeavors to build a reputation as far from Gen B as possible.” “You’ve beautifully crystallized the thoughts and discussions my cronies and I have been having for the last few years. I find it therapeutic knowing I wasn’t the only one thinking the exact same thing. Thanks for putting into words what we’ve all been suspecting. I can’t wait to read your responses to the parents of fragile adult children who will soon be responding to your column.” “Thank you for vindicating my own suspicions and disbelief and sadness re: the generational malaise. Disregard anything you may hear about the ‘Midwestern work ethic.’ It’s all over the country.” “I have a mantra about just this exact scenario * anybody can design something that’s cool * like your buddy’s new alt/goth/neo-glam/indie band’s CD cover * and make it look good. But show me what you can do with a piece of POS that the client wants to see 100 lbs. of s**t stuffed into a 5 lb. bag….then calls back at 5:30 pm for you to add another 20lbs to it by tomorrow morning….” – 20-year creative vet “Some seem to think that youth is the price of entry into our business. It’s not –talent is, and always has been. Before unleashing your arrogance and sense of entitlement, how about actually DOING something?” “I agree that my generation (I am 26) certainly seems to value work less than previous ones – generally – and that they feel that a college degree is a rite of passage to a job and earning more money. There are some of us in the minority that do believe in quality work, questioning the people above you, standing up for what you believe in and working hard. But which generation has been responsible for being too nice to their children, pushing education and degrees more than internships and actual jobs? I also do not subscribe to the baby boomer idea of working for 30 years to retire on a pittance and having my work define my life. I also want to actually be able to spend quality time with my children.” “You hit the nail on the head, but you quit hammering too soon! Here’s another trick I learned in my twenties that those today don’t know — teamwork surpasses ego, especially around the office.” “The kids are all about fame and fortune, but as you say, they aren’t willing to do the work. They assume good connections and networking will offset doing good, well-thought out work. Some of them spent half their time trying to figure out where to meet the right people at the right place and time, so as to see what they could do for them. And I thought we were the “ME” generation!” “I’m a fifty-something creative director who left the states in 1995 and currently live in Vietnam. And I’m here for a reason. It’s more fun than working in the US right now!” “Oh how I laugh at the new grads and a few other peers (who as you described SO accurately) who expect everything on a silver platter and are not willing to bust their ass for it. I cannot tell you how many times I have stayed up until 2 in the morning working on agency/client/pro-bono/freelance work while the rest of my co-horts went out and partied. I do it because I know it will pay off in the end and because Sir, I love what I do and had to work very hard to get where I am at now. The last thing I want is my job and dream of being a damn good Copywriter now and CD one day, ripped out from under me by some portfolio school jerk with bad puns in his/her writing and cheap cologne on his/her pieced together GAP “look”/Vintage threads.” “Everything you wrote is what I experience with my coworkers everyday. Their parents do EVERYTHING for them. They are heavily in debt (bar hopping, shopping, extravagant gift-giving) just to get their parents pay off their credit cards. By the following month, they are back where they were a month before. Mind you, we are all career transitioning in some way, while working here. However, most of the time, I can barely understand their logic in survival. They clearly have none – only mommy and daddy. They turn down jobs, because the money isn’t “enough” or the position “just [...]
Make Money From Storage Units and Yard Sales
Do you want to make money from home with the buying and reselling of merchandise found at mini storage auctions? If so, you need to find a great way to resell your purchases. While you do have a number of different choices, you may find hosting a yard sale to be your best option. Before outlining how you can use a yard sale as a way to profit from merchandise bought at self-storage auctions, it is important to focus on those items. When bidding at a storage auction, you are urged to use your best judgment. Do not place a huge bid when you do not know what is inside. If you can catch a glance at the items up for bid, look for name brand products, household appliances, antiques, and furniture. Hosting a yard sale is recommended when you have many items to sell. One table of sellable items may not be worth your time. If you buy a storage unit that packed to capacity or if you purchase the contents of multiple bays, a yard sale will be worth the time and energy. Also, remember that you can add your own unwanted personal items to the sale. When looking to make a profit reselling merchandise, you are urged to limit your business expenses. After all, the less you spend, the more money you make. This is true, but yard sales rely heavily on advertising. If you do not live in a heavily populated or a well-trafficked area, no one will know that you are having a sale. That is why advertising is important. As for how you should advertise your yard sale, visit Craigslist.org. There, you can place a free advertisement online, just find the closest city to make your posting. Buy advertising space in your local newspaper. Most have a section just for yard sales. This will cost money, but it will be more than worth it. Always include your full address, the date and time of the yard sale, as well as a sample of what you have for sale. On the day of your sale, hang bright colored signs with your address or rely on arrows. When using yard sales to resell items bought at a mini storage auction, keep your asking price affordable. Yes, you want to make a profit, but remember that people visit yard sales to find the best deals. That is why you are urged to have a lot of items on hand. The good news is that if you buy the contents of a whole storage unit, as opposed to a few closed bins, you should get a lot of things to sell. Before preparing for your yard sale, one step you will want to take is using the internet. Do you have any items that look like they could be valuable or antique? You can use eBay.com to see. Perform a completed auction search of each item. If it sells online for more than what you would make at the yard sale, pull it from your sale pile. Do not expect to get full price for antiques at a yard sale. Instead, sell them online or contact an antique dealer. Before your sale, start labeling all items for sale. Blank yard sale stickers are available for sale at most dollar stores and office supply stores. Pricing your items is important, as not all shoppers stop and ask for price information. If some don’t see prices listed, they will just move onto the next sale. The day before your sale, visit your local bank. Ask for change. If you get buyers who stop because they saw your sale when driving by, they may not have small bills. Be sure to have plenty of dollar bills and quarters on hand. Keep your money in a well-secured location. The day of your sale, start laying out items for sale. Group similar items together. For example, did you get a couple of boxes of movies, toys, and books? Make sure all books appear together, and so forth. Clothes can be folded on a table or hung from makeshift racks. Never lay items flat on the ground, especially if you have other options.
The Novel Network ? User’s Review
Recently my husband recommended an electronic reader device called “Kindle” to me since I love to read books on the computer. I am not a “tech-savvy” person but I couldn’t resist it. I quickly purchase one from Amazon, and I fell in love with my new toy. Visit The Novel Network Official Website For More Information I was very happy with the capabilities of this e-reader device. I believe I would never need to buy another real paper book again since I got my new Kindle. I can save more money and space for my room. But still I would need to purchase books online from Amazon as read-per-download basis. My hope became crumbled when I discovered the cost for each of my favorite books that I want to buy. I try to search for a cost-effective and easy to obtain my favorite books. I google for it, and I found the information from Yahoo Answers, it has a positive reviews from other users regarding this website called “The Novel Network”. I quickly checked out the website. The website claims to offer unlimited download of thousands of books which range from novels, comic books, newspapers, magazines and more all directly from the site to Amazon Kindle, also iPad/Phone, Nook and other kind of e-Reader devices. Then I was getting excited! I signed up with no hesitation since it has positive reviews and refund policy. After I received my membership, I was very impressed with this program. I was able to gain quick access to download “Twilight” series which are my favorite books directly to my Kindle within minutes of becoming a member of “The Novel Network”. I also downloaded the new Oprah biography book and Dan Brown’s “The Lost Symbol” from the website. I am able to download some of my kids’ favorite books and even some comic books for them. While I was on travel and waiting in my car for serviced, I can enjoy reading Vogue magazine which downloaded from The Novel Network online. Can you figure out how much did it cost me? Not a dime for downloading! As a member for more than a month now, I have to admit that it is an excellent service for Kindle owner. They have a large database with ultra high download speed and the download process is so simple that a non-tech savvy person like me can search and download easily. In fact, the program makes me realized that they have a bigger range than Amazon! If you want a cost-effective way to obtain your favorite title and enhance your experience with Kindle, I recommend that you give The Novel Network a shot. You won’t be disappointed. The personal support system is amazing. Within a minutes I sent email to them about how I didn’t know how to bookmark a page in one of my downloaded books, I received response in less than a minute. They are really helpful. The Novel Network has definite crushed Amazon. Visit The Novel Network Official Website For More Information
The Advantages of Physical Books
For years there have been whisperings of digital book readers which can store hundreds of novels; early adopters trumpeted the benefits of being able to carry your entire library around in your pocket, and the joys of switching between novels at a whim. Now the age of the digital book has truly arrived. Ads for digital book readers are on bus shelters and the TV – ebooks are even appearing on public transport, the same way iPods did in the mid-noughties. While ebooks have many benefits, though, there are also several unique advantages to physical books. Books are both a vehicle for knowledge and entertainment, and an aesthetically pleasing ornament; from leather-bound volumes of Dickens to glossy airport thrillers, few things bring a touch of class to a room in the same way as a wall of books. For many avid readers, your bookshelf is your trophy cabinet, where you display your social capital and your literary tastes – the books you enjoy (and the ones you feel you should enjoy but haven’t quite gotten around to reading yet). Visitors inevitably browse through their friends’ bookshelves, and there are few objects that bring more pleasure to loan to friends than a favourite book (presuming that it’s eventually returned!). One advantage of ebooks is that they allow you to switch quickly and easily between reading material, but it could be argued that books are meant to be enjoyed in a different way to magazines and websites. Rather than flicking between books absorbing bites of information, novels often require the reader’s full attention – holding a physical book, where you can clearly see your progress through the pages, provides a focus for the reader’s concentration. Then there’s the pleasure of entering a book shop itself. Whether it’s a musty second hand shop with tomes piled haphazardly against the walls, or a well-stocked chain where you can get a coffee with your Kafka, shopping in a book shop is unlike any other form of retail therapy. You can browse as long as you like, you can even sit down and sample the wares before buying, and because the items you’re purchasing are purely for your entertainment but also carry an edifying cache of knowledge, you can splurge on books and walk away feeling both indulgent and intellectually improved. Physical books, being made from paper and glue, also never need to be recharged – and they make fantastic, and reasonably priced, gifts, which can be inscribed to ensure the receiver never forgets who generously gave the gift. Whether it’s a hardback, paperback, picture book or coffee table book, all physical books benefit from the same advantages – but be careful, once you start collecting books, you may find it difficult to stop!

Sight Fishing – Stalking + Stealth = Success
It is just getting light enough to see. A misty layer of fog hovers over the water slowly rising as the morning sun warms the brisk air. The wind is nonexistent and a hundred feet downstream from the driftboat I see a small ring appear in the tailout – the telltale movement of a steelhead. The anchor has been out for fifteen minutes and we’ve been waiting. Waiting for and expecting this moment. There is nothing in sport that makes my heart beat faster than being close to a fish that has no idea that I am there. Chris carefully lifts the anchor and maneuvers the drift boat into position. Eighty feet…now sixty feet…at a forty-five degree angle with the lightest part of the sky behind us and to the left. The anchor is dropped ever so quietly and we wait again. The water is only three feet deep and the surface is like a marble counter top. We wait some more, my eyes fixated on the spot. I climb up on the bow keeping my profile low and my movements slow and I see it. It is about ten pounds. But I could care less. This is one case where size doesn’t matter. I strip out fifty feet of line directly down stream – forty feet of it is flyline, ten feet tapered fluorcarbon leader and the final two inches is a black and olive weighted krystal bugger on a size 6 hook. I strip in twenty feet of line and make one low back cast, one roll cast out to the right and the fly lands twenty feet above the target. A couple of mends upstream. Rod is down and dirty. I am standing up on the bow, but I look like Quazimoto, the hunchback of Notre Dame. Or is it Nostra Damus…anyway, I’m keeping a low profile in an effort to stay hidden. I can see the fly in the water and I tighten the line to start the swing. Ten feet to impact. Small mend. Six feet. I twitch the fly once. Swinging across in front of the steelhead…fish twitches once, moves to the fly…he ate it. I pull tight and give one sharp tug and lift the rod. FISH ON. ********** This is not fiction. Not “based on actual events.” This works. We do it all summer long on the McKenzie, Santiam, Umpqua, and Willamette Rivers in the Southern Willamette Valley in Oregon. And it also works when I’m fishing for bonefish, tarpon, and permit in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and Belize – although there is usually little or no current, we use different flies, and the crafts are pangas instead of driftboats. But it’s the same deal. If you want to catch fish by hunting them, then you have to think and act like a hunter. BE QUIET Fish don’t have ears, but they react to noise. Something about lateral lines and vibrations. All I know is when your boot or an oar hits the side of the drift boat or you drop your pliers, fish know it. And once they know you are in the area, your element of surprise is gone. The first cast to a fish that is unaware of your presence is almost always your best chance of a hookup. PAY ATTENTION I am constantly looking downstream for signs of fish. Whether I’m on the bow of a driftboat in Oregon, or in a panga on the flats of the Yucatan I am a German Shorthair in Chukar country – scanning the mangrove edges with my eyes instead of my nose. It is frustrating to float by targets you didn’t see, or to poll into a flat and have it erupt with the school of spooked baby tarpon screaming (silently) “hasta la vista”. Use good polarized lenses so you can look into the water for shadows and not rely solely on water surface breaks to give away your target’s position. BE PATIENT Be a Blue Heron. They wait…and wait…and wait some more. I will often linger in the driftboat for ten minutes or more scanning the entire time and see nothing. Then Chris lifts the anchor and we float over targets that were well camouflaged. If you think you are in a spot that has fish, wait it out. Eventually you will spot them. The light changes, the fish move, and sometimes your eyes just play tricks on you. Also, if you think you see a fish, you probably do. You may as well assume it’s a fish. The more you do this, the more adept at it you’ll become. THE MOMENT OF TRUTH – BE READY Run through the scenario in your mind. I think the moment of truth has many facets. The first one is seeing the fish. Then the perfect cast. Finally the moment your presentation has tricked the fish and you are hooked up. But an often overlooked detail is the rest of the battle. Perhaps it is because this part happens fewer times in our lives, but that is no excuse. Make sure your feet are clear of the flyline and there is nothing in the way as you battle. Make sure you have a plan for what to do if the fish goes downstream like he is late for a hot date with the ocean, or bolts for the mangrove to break you off in the subsurface roots. Is the net handy or stuck under the gear you tossed in the stern? And this last one is paramount – do not under any circumstances allow anyone in the boat to even say the word “CAMERA” let alone grab for it until your fish is in the net! Priest embraced Islam, (5) Ex- Coptic Priest and Missionary (Egypt)-iv
Priest embraced Islam, (5) Ex- Coptic Priest and Missionary (Egypt)-iv Part four This is the fifth priest in this series of “Priests Embraced Islam”. His name before Islam: Ibrahim Khalil Philobus His name after Islam: Ibrahim Khalil Ahmed He was born in 1919 in Alexandria, Egypt. He was an Egyptian Coptic priest and missionary. He studied theology and got a high degree from Princeton University. He studied Islam to find gaps to attack it; instead he embraced Islam with his four children, one of them is now a brilliant professor in Sorbonne University, Paris France. He leads and participated in many Debates about Islam and Christianity. He wrote five books (in Arabic), they are: Muhammad, peace be upon him in the Torah, the Gospel and the Quran Forgiveness (Salvation) in Islam and Christianity Israel the sedition of the generations in the Modern times Israel the sedition of the generations in the Old times The Orientalists and missionaries in the Arab world and Islamic countries He translated three books of Ahmad Deedat from English to Arabic, they are: Is crucifixion fiction or Real? What the Bible says about Muhammad [peace be upon him]? Who rolled back the stone? [Ahmad Deedat is the best known for his numerous inter-religious public debates with evangelical Christians; he has many video tapes of such debates on the net]. Ibrahim Khalil Ahmed continues his real and interesting story and says: “In 1955 I did complete my study and my material and living affairs became well established. I resigned from the company and set up a training office for importing stationery and school articles. It was a successful business from which I gained much more money than I needed. Thus I decided to declare my official conversion to Islam. On the 25th of December 1959, I sent a telegram to Dr. Thompson, head of the American Mission in Egypt informing him that I had embraced Islam. When I told my true story to Dr. Jamal he was completely astonished. When I declared my conversion to Islam, new troubles began. Seven of my former colleagues in the mission had tried their best to persuade me to cancel my declaration, but I refused. They threatened to separate me from my wife and I said: She is free to do as she wishes. They threatened to kill me. But when they found me to be stubborn they left me alone and sent to me an old friend of mine who was also a colleague of mine in the mission. He wept very much in front of me. So I recited before him the following verses from the Quran: “And when they listen to the revelation received by the Messenger, thou wilt see their eyes overflowing with tears, for they recognize the truth: They pray: ‘Our Lord! We believe, write us down among the witnesses. What cause can we have not to believe in Allah and the truth which has come to us, seeing that we long for our Lord to admit us to the company of the righteous?’” (Quran 5:84) I said to him, “You should have wept in humiliation to God on hearing the Quran and believe in the truth which you know but you refuse. He stood up and left me as he saw no use. My official conversion to Islam was in January 1960.” To be continued.

I never win the typical football debates during Super Bowl parties. Thanks to MSNBC’s Bill Briggs, I now have proof regarding Super Bowl facts and fictions. As Super Bowl Sunday inexorably draws near, I find myself in the familiar, annual arguments with my football fan friends. No, not a Bears – Colts debate. No, not a “These aren’t the ‘85 Bears” type retrospective tour of Super Bowls past. I’m talking about the old chestnut, “America shuts down for Super Bowl Sunday” speechifying. Every year, we go to our good friends’ house, which has the benefits of A) a humongous TV for Super Bowl (and commercial, and halftime show) viewing B) a large, flat backyard so we can pretend we know how to play football ourselves and C) Plenty of beer. I’m in charge of the artichoke dip which apparently gives me the authority to also weigh in on the various debates regarding how America Shuts Down on Super Bowl Sunday. My opinion has always been that this is a media-fueled, ego-driven view of football fans across the country, although until now I’ve had no proof to back up my view. Our friends, meanwhile, have had plenty of anecdotal evidence: Toilets overflow at halftime, avocado sales go through the roof (for guacamole), etc. Well, not anymore, my fellow skeptics! Our lovely friends over at MSNBC have given me plenty of ammunition for this year’s Super Bowl party debate, thanks to contributor Bill Briggs. In his article, “Super Bowl Myths Debunked” he actually does the research I’ve been to lazy to do myself. Another fact or fiction that turns out to be fiction, is the supposed skyrocketing sales of avocados, for Super Bowl Sunday parties. I always doubted this myself, but I thought, uneasily, that this may have been due to my bias towards my own artichoke dip. However, Briggs at MSNBC does the math for me: The biggest annual avocado purchasing event isn’t even Super Bowl Sunday – it’s Cinco De Mayo.
