Before departure, your checklist should be expanded to include business cards, as part of “Do I have my wallet / money, house keys, driver’s license” Any “per chance” meeting is an opportunity to give a business card. A morning jog or a quick trip to the local bank could be an opportunity to network. My wife and I always ask each other “Do you have business cards before leaving home. Make it a habit to carry {business card|business cards}s. 2. Insert a card when sending bill payments. Bills contain advertisements. Dissolution by C J Sansom – A Review

Dissolution is the first in a highly successful series of novels by author C J Sansom, centring on the life of hunch-backed lawyer, Matthew Shardlake.  It is set against the backdrop of Henry VIII’s reign and the dissolution of England’s monasteries, as Henry quarrels with Rome over his divorce of Catherine of Aragon. It is an historical crime thriller which is superbly written and captures the attention from start to finish, expertly interweaving the politics of the period with a gripping murder mystery. Shardlake finds himself caught up in the shadowy world of Thomas Cromwell, despatched to a monastery on the Sussex coast in the middle of winter to investigate the death of one of Cromwell’s commissioners.  With the head severed from the body, it is clear that foul play is afoot.  The monks are under suspicion, and Shardlake’s leaning towards Reform magnifies his distrust and discomfort.  Will they protect their wealth and power at any cost?  Who can he trust throughout his investigation?  To complicate matters even further, Shardlake himself was brought up in a Monastery and often compares the modern day Scarnsea to the monastery of his youth and how the times have changed. If you have a passing interest in the Tudor period of England, this book will draw you in effortlessly.  As well as a riveting storyline, Sansom peppers his prose with accurate depictions of medieval life and creates a vibrant world without going over the top.  You don’t have to have prior knowledge of this era to appreciate the landscape laid out before your eyes. You will no doubt feel disappointed when you reach the end of this book – but only because there is no more left to read!  But fear not, dear readers, for there are another four Shardlake novels to date with which to quench your thirst for satisfying historical fiction.  The subsequent books in order are: Dark Fire, Sovereign, Revelation, and Heartstone. In summary, this book is a must-read, whether you are a history buff or not.  If you finish this book and can resist reading the others in the series, there is something wrong with you!

H.G Wells: Reinventing the Literary Wheel

Herbert George Wells was an English novelist and prolific writer. His many works included contemporary novels, writings on history, along with political and social commentary. He is, to most of us, most familiar for his science fiction novels. Wells, and author Jules Verne, are considered to be the foremost innovators of the science fiction genre and have been referred to as the “fathers of science fiction.” Some of Wells most famous science fiction writings that have been made into motion pictures include “The Island of Doctor Moreau,” “The Time Machine,” “The War of the Worlds,” and “The Invisible Man.” From Reading to Writing After suffering an accident during his youth, Wells became bed-ridden for a time and to help cope with the situation, he turned to reading books his father would bring him from the library. These books opened a new chapter in Wells’ life leading to his fascination for the fictional world. The desire to write followed proving to be the perfect outlet for his fantasies and ideas. Themes in Wells Novels Novels like “In The Days of the Comet,” or “The Shape of Things To Come” primarily show the world moving toward a catastrophic state. However, the characters in these novels would find ways to cope with the worlds problems and come to realize a better way of living. His novel “The Shape of Things To Come” was later adapted into Alexander Kordas 1936 film “Things to Come.” The story proved prophetic as a World War was in the not to distant future. In addition, Wells novels also investigated the idea of nature versus nurture and would question humanity as he did with his novel The Island of Doctor Moreau. In 1920, just after the war, H.G. Wells published his best-selling three volume work, “The Outline of History” which helped to popularize writings on world history. Two years later, Wells would produce a shorter work also pertaining to world history; “A Short History of the World,” which proved to be equally popular. Two other long works followed: “The Science of Life” and “The Work, Wealth and Happiness of Mankind.” Today, “The Outline of History” remains in print, and “A Short History of the World” was been re-edited in 2006. Wells nonfictional works have both significance and an underlying purpose. Wells envisioned mankind’s struggle for survival with people searching for rational ways to save humanity. This is a quest that continues today.  Film Adaptations of Wells Work Several of H.G. Wells classic novels have been adapted into film versions. Indeed, his works have produced some of the best films of the 20th century. “The Time Machine,” which initially appeared in his journal called “The Chronic Argonauts,” has been produced into several film versions. This novel was first published in 1895. However, “The War of the Worlds” written in 1898 is probably his best known film adaptation. Despite several decades passing since the novel was first released, “The War of the Worlds” was, and is still, able to capture the attention of moviegoers. The 1953 version achieved a considerable amount of success and is considered a sci-fi classic, while the 2005 remake by Steven Spielberg achieved undeniable box office success. H.G. Wells had indeed reinvented the literary wheel and changed the way we look at literature by introducing different genre and devising new ways of interpreting literature and its impact on society.

Traditional Books Vs E-Books

Traditional books have been around since time immemorial. They have taken up an important position in our life. They are a constant source of knowledge and provide textual information to the global society. The traditional books have their own market demand.E-books on the other hand have emerged as the new contender in the market of reading. E-books have become quite a rage with the latest technological advancement. The e-books are nothing but the digital version of traditional books. People can take the service of online bookstores which provide both traditional books as well as e-books.With the emergence of e-books, it has become a matter of debate, as to which one is better, traditional book or e-book. So here are a few points on which a short comparison has been drawn between them: • Portability The e-book readers are really handy to carry and the number of e-books you can carry is also high. Three to six books can be carried at a time, and if the available memory is high then more books can be carried. While on the other hand, it is sometimes difficult to carry even one printed book, thus giving an edge to the e-books. • Features The digital books have features which enable easy sharing among your circle. Certain phrases can also be found easily in e-books. These features are not available in traditional books. • Durability The e-books are durable and they won’t get damaged with time as in the case of traditional books. The pages of the traditional books get damaged with time, thus making it impossible to read after a few years. • Cost effective E-books prove to be quite cost effective as compared to traditional books. In the long run, the e-books are found out to be more pocket friendly than the traditional books. E-books when bought in bulk can become quite cheap. • Use of devices Traditional books do not need any device for reading. They do not have to depend on batteries. People reading traditional books can get access to them anytime, anywhere. Whereas in case of e-books, e-reader is necessary, this often needs to be charged for providing access to the people to use them. • Resale value Traditional books have a resale value as compared to e-books. It is possible to resell an ordinary book if needed, but e-books cannot be sold once bought. Thus e-books do not have a resale value. All said and done, it is still early to say that e-books have taken up the market of traditional books. There is still a large portion of the society who favors traditional books over e-books. Online businesses like online bookstores offer both types of books, be it traditional or be it e-books. The difference is just that e-books are delivered quickly whereas traditional books take up some time to be delivered depending on the location of the user.

The Work of John Cheever

One of the foremost American writers, especially among the New England writers, John Cheever is often referred to as the “Chekhov of the suburbs” for his powerful, character-based fiction, largely revolving around the Upper East Side of New York and Manhattan as well as the Westchester suburbs. His stories often revolve around well-off men and women who drink at the poker table and have affairs. Cheever was born into a prosperous Massachusetts family with an alcoholic father who eventually squandered all their cash, forcing his mother to open a gift shop in Quincy, MA, which was considered an “abysmal humiliation” for the family. Cheever attended school and won various writing contests eventually writing full time, editing and writing for the WPA Guide to New York City. Cheever enlisted in the Army and published a collection of stories which later in life he came to revile, trying to destroy every copy he found. The book is said to have saved his life, though, as his Army officer read the book and transferred Cheever out of the dangerous infantry company he was in to the old Paramount studio in Queens. His old infantry went on to be one of the companies to raid Normandy Beach, where many of them lost their lives. He was given an advance to write a novel in 1946 and for five years he would dress in his only suit, and take the elevator in his New York apartment building down to the maid’s room in the basement, where he would strip down to his boxers and write. Cheever would later get a Guggenheim Fellowship  which allowed him to write more and worry less about money, taking car of his family or fixing his car body kit. Cheever would appear on the cover of Time magazine in 1964, solidifying his importance as a major American writer. A film adaptation of Cheever’s story, “The Swimmer” was made in 1966 starring Burt Lancaster. Cheever was frequently a guest on the set to make sure the film was faithful to his story. Cheever, like his father, was an alcoholic, and in 1966 he suffered a major blow when his psychiatrist called him a “neurotic man, narcissistic, egocentric…and friendless.” After negative reviews of his novel “Bullet Park,” his alcoholism and depression deepened. He suffered a pulmonary edema in 1973 and almost died, he spent a month in the hospital and returned home vowing to never touch a drink again, but that did not last long. In 1977, at the height of Cheever’s alcoholism, suicidal thoughts and depression, he appeared on the cover of Newsweek, which praised his novel “Falconer”  as one of his best works and one of the great American novels of the time. Cheever died in 1982 from cancer which had spread to his femur, pelvis and bladder. His children Susan and Benjamin became writers as well, publishing their own memoirs about their father.

How to Write Best-Seller Book Reviews on Amazon

Many people think of Amazon as an amazing site where they can buy books or personal electronics items. What’s not to like about Amazon, its ease of use, helpful shopping venues, and excellent customer service? While all of this is great for Amazon fans, for the past 5 years I have followed the progress and development of Amazon’s various user platforms with equal interest. I must admit that Amazon is now one of my favorite sites to visit – mainly because of its success in meeting the needs of its users. To tell you a secret, I often visit Amazon several times a week “just to hang out” or to see “what’s new”! If you have not visited this site recently, you might be pleasantly surprised by all the “buzz” going on at Amazon. However, if you are already a fan of Amazon, you might visit occasionally to check out the price of a book or camera that you intend to buy or, like me, you may have become more involved in what is now called the greater “Amazon Community”. Regardless of your current level of involvement with Amazon, you will find an extensive number of resources that anyone can use to connect with others who have similar ideas and interests. Whether you want to write book reviews for your own pleasure, for social or academic purposes, or for driving traffic to your website or blog, Amazon is an excellent resource to use to make yourself and your ideas known. All of these resources are free and available for everyone to use. In addition, you are able connect from Amazon to two of the top social media networks using these resources. The main two social networks connected directly to Amazon currently are: Facebook and Twitter. However, one resource of the Amazon community that I enjoy in particular is its book review platform. Anyone can review books on Amazon, and it’s an extremely powerful user platform. For the purposes of this article, I would like to give you some brief ideas about writing best-seller book reviews on Amazon. The first thing you need to decide is this: For what subject(s) do I have a great amount of personal knowledge and passion? For example, I have a language website and blog that I am currently developing. So I went to Amazon and conducted a few searches on some English language resource books that I have used myself. When I was still in college, I had developed an SAT Verbal Prep course which I taught to small high school study groups for many years. I conducted an “SAT Verbal Prep” search on Amazon. Immediately I saw the book “Hot Words for the SAT” which is a book that I had actually used in my SAT Prep course, so I chose this book from my search to write about. However, what if your area of knowledge is photography? You would simply go to that category on an Amazon search and browse through the search results to find a book that you have read, or that you are at least familiar with, on your topic. The second thing you would need to do is go to the actual page of the book for which you will write a review. I did an Amazon book search on Photography to use as an example for this article. In the drop down menu before I actually clicked “Search”, I saw the sub-category book title just for me – “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Photography Essentials”! It sounded promising and full of potential, so I clicked it. The next page is your book’s listings by the different Sellers on Amazon. But that is not what I am really interested in here. To the right of the book image is a row of 5 stars. I move my mouse over to the stars, and a hover box pops up automatically. It says that there are 37 reviews of this book, and it breaks the book reviews down into categories from 1 star (so-so) reviews of the book to the 5 star (best) reviews of the book. I also see the number of each type of review from 1 to 5. I click the 5 star reviews to see what a really good book review on Amazon looks like. I also read a few reviews in each category just to see what each reviewer has discussed concerning this book. What I don’t want to do is repeat everything that has already been said; the main thing that I want to do is point out some fresh ideas about this book. This brings me to some tips on actually writing the book review. Here are the most important ideas to remember: 1) Keep It Short. Writing a book review on Amazon does not require you to summarize the book! I actually advise everyone to avoid this unless you just want to name three to four of the main chapters or headings to give the reader a broad sense of what the book covers. Common sense will tell you that if you are about to write the 38th review on a book, it probably has already been “summarized to death” by everyone else before you. In essence, they have done the hard work for you. So keep it light and use fresh ideas and perspectives. 2) Make It Personal. For instance, you could mention when/where you first read the book, something like this: “I first read ‘The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Photography Essentials’ by Mark Jenkinson as a high school sophomore. When I started using the ideas and applications found in this book for my own photography projects, I found that my photography skills improved significantly. Other people started asking me to take photos at their weddings and other family events. I actually credit my becoming a world class photographer to the ideas I first learned in this book”. See what I mean? This makes you personal and credible to other review readers. [...]
