Promoting Books on Facebook: Six Strategies for Success
Many book authors set up a profile on Facebook, but fail to take full advantage of this powerful networking tool. Below are six strategies for promoting books and authors on Facebook: 1. Take full advantage of the promotional opportunities on your Facebook Profile. For example, just below your photo is a small box where you can enter a concise description of what you do, including the title of your book and a link to your book sales page. The About Me box (under Personal Information) is a good place to describe your book and your business. In the Contact Information section you can enter multiple website addresses. Post your book cover in your photo album or another application and display it in the left column of your profile. Mention your book in your status updates, without being too promotional. For example, announce your book launch, mention reviews and awards the book has received, talk about your book promotion activities. Remember, your Facebook profile must be registered in your real name. If you create a profile for your book or business, you risk having your account cancelled. 2. Facebook Pages are similar to personal profiles, but they are created for business use and they are an ideal place for promoting books. You can create a page for your book, your business, or even one of the characters in your novel. People join a page by becoming a fan. You can send messages to your fan base, which will show up in their Facebook newsfeeds. You may want to offer an incentive to join (or at least visit) your page, such as a free download or a coupon for one of your products. Another way to attract fans is to set your page up as an information hub, offering links and resources. 3. Groups are a great place for book authors to meet people who share their interests and find new friends, while subtly promoting books. Search for groups by entering keywords in the Search box at the top of the page and then clicking on the Groups tab. You can gain visibility on a group page by introducing yourself on the wall, participating in disucssions, and posting your book cover, photos or videos. Forming your own group can also be beneficial. Be sure to encourage discussions and offer valuable information such as free downloads and links to resources. You can send direct message the entire group. 4. Hosting an event is another way of promoting books. Set up a Facebook Event and invite others to live or virtual events such as book signings, teleseminars, speaking engagements or virtual book tours. Joining other people’s events is a good way to get visibility because you can write on the event wall and post photos. 5. Facebook displays pay-per-click ads on most pages on the site, and ads can be targeted by age, gender, location, education level, relationship status, or keywords in people’s profiles. Consider advertising if you have a very specific target market that can be targeted by more than one of the above criteria. For example, if you have written an exercise book for women over 50, you can target that demographic on Facebook and you can even target the keyword “exercise” in their profiles. 6. The Facebook Marketplace is a classified advertising area where you can post a free listing promoting your books. It’s worth an experiment if the topic of your book is something that might be searched for on a classified ad site. For example, if you list a book about collecting costume jewelry, people searching for “costume jewelry” will see your listing. (Don’t forget to use this strategy on Craig’s List and eBay as well). There are a number of ways of promoting books and authors on Facebook, but remember to be subtle when using profiles, pages, groups and events. If you are too promotional or make promoting books your main focus, you will turn people off.
The Gospel of Writing According to Marilyn, Chapters 7-8
The Gospel of Writing According to Marilyn, Chapter 7: Ninety-five percent of Writing is Just Showing Up If I were to ask each of you why you haven’t written a book, I’m guessing the most common answer would be that there doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day. There are people with children, businesses, extended families, and any other life picture you can imagine. Yet, they are published authors who had the same life as you, and they were able to write their book. What’s the difference? I believe that the fundamental difference is how much you value what you have to say. And that stems from how you value yourself. So, make yourself your highest priority. Schedule an hour a day when you do nothing but sit down to write. Block the time out in your calendar. Let the people in your life know that it’s sacred time for you. Don’t give in to the pressure that you will feel when you are making these changes for yourself. You will be amazed at how much you can write in an hour’s time. When you consistently write each day, you will make significant progress in your manuscript and in your mastery of the writing craft. The Gospel of Writing According to Marilyn, Chapter 8: Passion is the Fuel That Propels the Writing Engine. One of my favorite authors is historical fiction writer Sharon Kay Penman. The historical period she writes about is the Middle Ages and she creates incredible romantic stories using actual people and events. She is a truly remarkable writer. Her most famous work is titled The Sunne in Splendour, about the reign of King Richard III. The novel is nearly 1,000 pages of very dense, imaginative, and historically accurate writing. The fascinating part of Penman’s story is that she wrote the novel while studying law. Even more amazing is that after she had finished writing the novel, she put the only copy of the manuscript in her briefcase (she had written it on a typewriter, before computers) and put it in her car. When she returned, someone had broken into her car and stole the briefcase. Having no other copy, she started again and rewrote the entire novel! That, my friends, is an example of having a passion that propels the writing engine. Does writing ever feel difficult? Definitely. If you want to write really write nothing anyone says or does will stop you. So have courage, feel the passion. Allow the words to come out. No writer is born a master. There will always be revisions. Find that fire within, stoke it, build the flames, and keep adding fuel. It will drive your writing engine.
Book Review – the Venetian Mask by Rosalind Laker
Eighteenth century Venice is an era of decadence and sin, intrigue and corruption, illicit romance and dark secrets. Carnivale and the wearing of opulent masks make hiding while in public easy. Trysts and illicit encounters abound. Danger and violence lurk around any chosen corner. Under this magnificent and glamorous backdrop, the lives of three young girls, Adrianna, Elena, and Marietta, intertwine at the “Ospedale della Pieta” a renowned music conservatory for orphaned girls. Adrianna, the most famous and most highly revered singer of the Pieta gives up the opportunity for a sensational career in the opera to marry a talented Venetian mask- maker whom she has fallen deeply in love with. The beautiful blonde and blue-eyed Elena catches the attention of Marco and Fillipo Celano, two brothers from a very rich and powerful family. She is in love with and betrothed to Marco, but when he suddenly dies before their wedding, she must become the wife of his brother, Filipo, a man who is ambitious as well as dangerous. To maintain his lofty position within the Celano family, Filipo must sire an heir, but Elena remains barren. The more desperate he becomes for an heir, the more he turns to violence towards the gentle Elena. The rich voice and beauty catapults Marietta into top spot at the Pieta. She becomes one of the most famed singers of Venice. Her notoriety draws the notice and love of a handsome Frenchman named Alix Desgrange. Their plans to elope are ruined when Alix’s guardian learns of the tryst. The two lovers are forever separated when Alix must marry someone else in his homeland of France. Several years pass. Marietta receives a marriage proposal from Domenico Torrisi. The Torrisi and Celano families have been mortal enemies for many years. Once she marries into the Torrisi family, she will never be allowed to see Elena again. Both husbands forbid the two women to maintain their friendship. With the aid of Adrianna, Elena and Marietta begin to meet discreetly. Their friendship continues under these clandestine conditions. Further, they develop a repertoire of secret hand and eye signals to communicate with each other whenever in public. Clandestine meetings, secret births, murder, vengeance, vendetta, betrayal, and political intrigue decorate this intricate plot. I was easily drawn into the story as the simplicity and joy of life for the three “Pieta” girls deteriorate. Rosalind Laker vividly recreates the mystique of the “golden age” of Venice where sin can hide behind the mask of the wearer. She has wonderfully portrayed the decadence of Venice. The reader will be swept away on a heart-wrenching journey of violence, trickery, and dark secrets. The story’s realistic sub-plots of hatred and obsession draw the reader deeper into the tale. The rich decadence of Venetian life of centuries past, unforgettable characters, and the roller-coaster of twists and turns sprinkled throughout the story, make this an unforgettable novel. The stories of the three girls and the hardships they must overcome is endearing. The ending does not disappoint. I recommend this unique novel for anyone who wants to vividly experience the rich culture of the ancient city of Venice.

Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne
Jules Verne (1828—1905), the author of Around the World in Eighty Days, was born in Nantes, France. He had an innate love for the sea and for travel and adventure when he was a child. Later, he devoted himself to literature and wrote several scientific romances, which gained him the name Father of Modern Science Fiction. Verne’s novels are usually full of scientific facts and details and they pleased the public by all the scientific developments of the nineteenth century. They foretell with uncanny accuracy the inventions and advanced technology of the twentieth century, and have become the literary stepping-stone for generations of science fiction writers. Verne’s story Five Weeks in a Balloon (1863) brought him his first success. The following year, he published Journey to the Center of the Earth, which also made a great hit. After that, A trip to the Moon (1865), 20000 Leagues Under the Sea (1870), and The Mysterious Island (1875) were turned out one after another and they brought Verne worldwide popularly Verne’s heroes are always those who risk their lives for scientific research and progress, and they have a great influence on the readers. For the first time, people began to believe that journeys into space or under the sea might really be possible. Many even tried to bring that day nearer by their own efforts. Jules Verne inspired a whole generation of scientists and he probably travelled more widely in his imagination than any other writer. This we can see quite clearly in Around the World in Eighty Days This is a book of science fiction which tells us an exciting story about an English gentleman, Mr. Phileas Fogg, who makes a bet with his clubmates and manages to travel around the world in eighty days. It gives us a vivid description of the many difficulties and incidents which happen on his journey. Mr. Fogg and his servant Passep artout start their journey from London and travel eastward. Mr. Fox, a detective, who is investigating a bank robbery case, suspects Mr. Fogg of being the robber and follows him all through the journey in an attempt to arresthim as soon as he gets the warrant. So Mr. Fogg, a man with courage and intelligence, tries to deal with all the troubles caused by Mr. Fox, and in the meantime, manages to overcome the difficulties on his way, such as missing a train or a steamboat, being caught in a storm on the sea, attacks by the Indians, etc. With the help of his servant, Mr. Fogg saves an Indian woman Aouda, who would otherwise become a victim of the “Suttee.” The story ends happily with Mr. Fogg winning the bet and his marriage with Aouda. From this story, we can see the author’s deep love for the sea, travel and adventure, which played an important role in his life. We are also astonished and convinced by his fertile imagination and scientific and geographical knowledge. The story is so well-knit and fascinating that the reader cannot put down the book before he finishes reading it. Though the book is full of scientific facts and details, the reader does not feel bored or confused at all, for in it profound truths are explained in simple language with accuracy and clarity. By reading his novels, the reader can both enjoy himself and obtain knowledge. And that is why, perhaps, that Verne’s novels have won great popularity all over the world ever since they were published.
Creating a 50th Anniversary Photo Book
A photo book makes a great 50th anniversary present, and is a fun thing to put together. Here are some tips to help you along the way. Compiling Your Material: Start early! The more time you give yourself to start and complete this project, the better the finished product will be in the end. Start of course by getting some photos of the couple’s wedding. If you are creating this book as a surprise to the anniversary couple, you may have to be a little sneaky in order to complete this step. If you visit often, you will have to find out where the photos are and how to get them somewhere that you can scan and return them without being noticed. If you don’t have access to the photos, enlist the help of someone who does, such as one of your siblings or a family friends, or whoever you need to in order to get these photos. Of course, you won’t just want photos of the wedding. If possible you will want to somehow represent all of the 50 happy years that the couple has had together. In order to accomplish this, you can either sneak more photos from their house, or, better still, gather as many photos as you can from the family and friends of the couple. Why is this better? The main reason is that when you widen the circle of where you are gathering the photos, you are more likely to get photos that the couple hasn’t seen, or hasn’t seen many times over the years. As you are gathering your photos, see if you can get some of your contributors to give you some stories and anecdotes about the couple. One way to do this is to send out questionnaires so that your participants can fill in answers as they see fit. You might also ask them to write a paragraph or two about the photos that they send you and the reasons that the photos are special to them, and what great memories they hold. Try to include all of the things that the couple has accomplished together, and include plenty of photos of their kids, both as youngsters and grownups. Arranging and Organizing: Your anniversary photo book will work best if it is organized in some way, rather than looking like just a bunch of random photographs. Start with the wedding photos and move forward from there through all of the years as best you can. Include the snippets and stories that you have gathered and come up with some titles for the different sections, such as “Beginnings” or “the San Diego Years” or whatever works best for the trajectory of your book. If you are new at layout and design, you can either enlist the help of a family member who knows something about these things, or download some templates online. Printing and Binding: Use the highest quality printing that you can afford, such as digital color. When it comes time to bind your book, you can either use an online service, or do the binding yourself. Thermal binding machines are the ones that are used to create hardcover books, and there are many models that can be easily found for less than $100 new. These machines are very fun and easy to use as well, so you can make as many books as you want, for whatever occasion, whenever you want, and save a lot of money in the process.
Your E-books are not Selling!
Have you written an e-book recently? Do you want to make more money with it? The best way to make more money with your e-book is by selling more copies of your e-book! If your e-book is not selling as well as you would like (or if it is not selling at all), you are not alone. Every week solopreneurs contact me to ask for help with marketing their e-books. Here are two of the most common stories of e-books not selling: – A service professional has spent hundreds of hours writing an interesting e-book, had a copywriter create a sales letter for the e-book and put the e-book up for sale on the web site. It has been a year since the e-book was released, and the service professional has sold a grand total of two copies. For more details go to www.ebook-creation-toolkit.com. He has invested a lot of time and money into the e-book and wants to get some return on that investment. What should he do now? – A coach has seen many of her colleagues release e-books. She decided to do the same thing. She has created an e-book put it up on her web site. She has posted information about the e-book on a few coaching lists, but no one is coming to check out the e-book on her web site. How can she get people to at least come to check out the e-book on her web site? Does this sound familiar? If your e-books are not selling, you are not alone. Many service professionals have told me that they have spent many hours creating an e-book, only to post it on their web site and find out that it is not selling. Do you want to know why this is happening and how to prevent this from happening to your e-book? Here is how: – Your target market may not even be interested in the e-book. Sometimes service professionals are too excited about the idea that they create an e-book without finding out if their target market is interested in buying it. Remember, your target market must want to buy your e-book in order for the e-book to sell and make you money. Before you invest time and money into an idea, survey your target market and make sure that the topic for your product resonates with your target audience. – Your e-book is not priced for the target market. This is a common mistake that I see service professionals make. Many service professionals under price their e-books, thinking that they will get more sales by doing this. Unfortunately, this is not true. Since the e-book has many benefits and a low price, your potential customers doubt that what you are promising them is true. Great benefits and a low price usually sound too good to be true. You can also visit us at www.make-your-ebook-secrets-revealed.com. Therefore, many people just pass on your great offer. Instead, these people buy from someone else who sells their e-books at a higher price. Many times I have seen that sales of e-books have gone up once the price was increased. Spend some time on researching your product pricing; this is a very crucial part of your overall e-book marketing plan. – You do not market your product effectively. Many solopreneurs put up a product on their web site and expect it to sell. The truth is that a product will not sell on its own. To have consistent product sales you need to drive web site traffic to your product page every single day. If you want to earn money with your e-books and teleseminars, make sure that your target market is interested in buying them, price your products correctly and market them effectively.
