Can Book Giveaways Hurt Sales?

As an author and publisher, I have attended a number of Internet chats in support of eBook and print book releases. Internet chats are largely informal, hosted either by the publisher or a third-party website (usually a site for book reviews), where authors and readers can interact, ask questions and have fun. Look around some of the popular book review websites, particularly those which focus on romance fiction, and you will find chats are scheduled almost daily. Some eBook publishers, for example, host regular monthly chats to keep readers up to date. Whether or not the chats do anything to stimulate sales is up for debate. At best, most freeware chat rooms used by such sites can host a maximum of twenty to thirty people, and publishers often have to be wary to see if the majority of chatters are the authors. Personal experience has seen scheduled chats comprised mainly of authors, chatting with each other! While it is beneficial to offer these promotional opportunities, it hardly does a publisher good if readers do not come. That said, incentives are usually offered to fill the chat rooms with readers. Authors may give away a prize to one lucky reader, like a small gift or a free book. The question of whether or not it is prudent to distribute complimentary books as prizes has long been argued among authors, particularly in the eBook industry. Some authors condone the practice on the premise that a book in the hands of a reader may encourage that reader to buy more books. Especially if the book is part of a series, the reader may wish to collect the entire set. Using a book as the proverbial carrot, too, may guide readers to the author’s website, where they may find titles appealing enough to purchase. Also, an author seen as being so generous may develop a following in a faithful readership that will benefit them in the long run. On the other hand, such generosity may backfire, according to other authors who condemn the practice. When you consider the tightly knit readership of eBooks, particularly in the romance genre, authors may tend to see the same Internet nicknames populating chats. If word gets around enough that free books are the prizes, an author might soon discover that he or she is giving away her entire catalog to the same readers without seeing any profits. An author can feel frustrated with the practice, and wonder if such regular contest winners will ever buy his/her book. Of course, an author might feel obligated to give away something, and not upset the readers. Word of mouth is still the most effective method of promotion, and for an author to gain a reputation for being difficult or stingy can be damaging to future sales. Should an author feel trapped, however? The answer is an emphatic no. There are ways to successfully offer giveaways without giving away everything. While gifts like soaps, teas, and other trinkets can add up over time (though they are tax-deductible, authors, make notes!), there is one giveaway trick that can help stimulate sales. The next time you participate in a chat, write a one to two-thousand word story that reads as a supplement to your novel. It could be a sequel, a prequel, or a side story with supporting characters. Have it formatted as in eBook in HTML or PDF and offer it as an exclusive prize to one winner. The gesture may influence the winning reader to buy the corresponding book, and your other titles. As time goes on and you write more novels, you can offer these short tidbits to entice readers to sample your work, then buy! This way you are giving away a story, but not every story. Give it a try, and watch your readership grow.

Buying Books Online is so Simple

Even in these days of high technology, umpteen channels on your TV, and a barrage of other activities to keep us occupied, for many people there is still nothing like immersing yourself in a good book. However, the new technology of the Internet can help you choose, buy and get your books delivered to you within days – all without having to leave the comfort of your own home. The beauty of buying books online is quite simply, there is more choice. You will never find all the books available in online book stores in all the book shops in London. And they’re all just a few clicks away. Thousands of titles cover all ages and interests. If you can’t find the book online, it probably doesn’t exist! You can keep up to date with all the new thrillers, books online include: from Grisham, Rankin, Koontz; and the chick-lit: from Josephine Cox, Cathy Kelly, and Marian Keyes. Maybe you’d like a full collection of Agatha Christie’s books, or would like to buy all those Enid Blyton books for your children (so that you can re-live your childhood!). By buying books online, you can do that! What’s your favourite subject? Or new area of interest? You can find everything online from sports to science, food to fiction, technology to travel and potholing to politics. You might want to find the latest detox diet for your mum, or the newest wizard fiction for the kids or find out what really went on in your favourite celebrities’ biography. If you’re more used to choosing books from a library and clicking your way to a purchase online, don’t worry. Buying books online is simple, straightforward and perfectly safe. If the book is for someone else, you can ask for it to be gift wrapped and sent to their address. The perfect present! Even better, books online are often cheaper than in the shops. There’s a happy ending.

10 Book Writing Mistakes That Stop Your Dream In Its Tracks

Did you start writing your book and quit? Yes, I know you’re not a quitter. Like many of us, you may be making some simple mistakes that block your book’s progress and success. Correct the following mistakes; complete your book and prosper: Mistake 1 Failure to start small Inexperienced book writers aim too high. Don’t try to fit everything you know or researched into a one big book. Plan too big and you may end up with a monster book that turns your potential readers off. Remember many people in the new millennium are busy and impatient. They look for short, quick easy reads. Solution: Plan a short book first. If you have loads of interesting information, consider breaking your book into parts. Even a series of books is better than one large volume in the non-fiction genre. Mistake 2 Failure to educate oneself about book writing Many novice book writers fail to educate themselves about book writing. If you’ve never traveled this road before, enroll in a book writing course. If you have little time, sign up for an email course to jumpstart your writing. Invest in your book project by hiring a professional editor to edit your work. Solution: Invest time to learn about book writing. A client of mine said, “I want to invest in my work but I have no budget to start with.” No worries; more book writers than you know have started with a low to no-string budget. Enroll in free book writing courses. Invest time in learning to self-edit your work until you can afford to hire a professional. Mistake 3 Failure to target your audience If you fail to pinpoint who you are writing for, your chapters will lack focus. Your copy will fail to connect with readers. If you do manage to hook your readers, most won’t make it to the end of your book. Beginning writers who make this mistake bore their readers with flat, lack luster writing. Solution: Target your book audience. Create a profile of your reader. Write down their complaints, their needs and/or problems that your book solves. Write your book to that person. You will have tight focused copy that compels your reader to keep reading to the end. Mistake 4: Failure to develop a sizzling title and back cover first Most newbie book writers stall at this one. They don’t realize a hot title helps the author stay motivated. Writing the back cover first helps crystallize your book’s message. With a clear message in front, you can write compelling copy that draws your readers to keep reading. Solution: Develop a hot title and back cover first to write tight focused copy that sells. A hot title includes the top benefit of the book. It is usually short, clear and/or tells a story. Mistake 5Failure to keep writing in the midst of everyday life Many writers believe you have to get away from everything to write a successful book. No you don’t. I know several novelist and non-fiction book writers who had to write during a long commute to get their best book written and out to the world. They accomplished it because they systematically worked on their book until it was done. Solution: Avoid marathon writing. In the midst of your busy life, designate your time to write (work on your book) with a goal to completion. You may not be making all of these mistakes. Yet one or two will stop your book dream in its tracks. Your audience is waiting. Implement the above solutions, get your book written, release it to the world and prosper.

How to Make Money Writing Book Reviews

If you’re an avid reader, you might zip through two or three books a week (maybe more!).  Maybe you even write book reviews and post them at Amazon or other online venues.  Have you ever thought of maintaining your own blog, posting the reviews there, and making money from your efforts? I’m not promising that you could make a hundred thousand dollars a year doing this (though I suppose it’s possible), but I make several hundred bucks a month through the Amazon affiliate program, and there’s no reason you couldn’t make some extra cash too. While it does take time and effort to build up a blog, it’s something you can do in your spare time, and if you’re a story-lover then it’ll be a breeze to review the books you read, so it won’t seem like work (thus making it easier to stick to it!). Here’s how to get started: Pick a niche While you can build up a blog that reviews all sorts of books, it’s easiest to draw an audience (and start “ranking” in the search engines) if you become known as a reviewer of certain types of books.  For example, I enjoy reading fantasy stories and business books, so either one of those might make a good niche for me to cover.   Your goal is to attract readers to your blog, and if they love whatever genre or non-fiction niche you regular review, they’ll be more likely to come back again and again.  If you review a mystery novel one day, a cookbook the next, and a history book the day after that, your readers might not come back as often (since they’re only interested in some of the books you review).   It’s best to become the go-to person in a certain niche. Start your blog You can start a blog without spending a dime if you sign up at Blogger or another site that offers everything you need for free.  If you get serious and start making some money, you can always register a domain name and pay for your own web hosting later on.   In the beginning, the most important thing is to just get started.  Since you’ve probably already read scores of books in your niche, it shouldn’t be hard to whip out those first few book reviews.  Once you’ve posted five or ten reviews, you can find an affiliate program to sign up for. Sign up to be an affiliate Being an affiliate is essentially working on commission.  You get special links to put on your site (i.e. if you reviewed a Harry Potter book, you’d want to link to that specific book at the bookstore), and you make money when a reader buys that book through your link.  Typical earnings are around 5%-6% for books, which isn’t a lot, but it adds up over time.  The more reviews you write (and books you link to), the more money you can end up making.  Every review you write will stay on your blog indefinitely, which means that three years from now you could still be earning commissions on reviews you write today. As far as which affiliate program to join, all of the major booksellers have them.  I like Amazon because they sell so much more than books.  It’s not at all uncommon for someone to click on the book link I mentioned and end up buying other things while they’re there.  Once, I made $70 in one sale when someone bought a plasma tv (something I’d never written about). Bring readers to your blog There are whole books out there on building traffic to your site, so I’ll just touch on this briefly, but you need to do more than write reviews.  The big money starts coming when lots and lots of people are finding your reviews (either through the search engines or through links from other sites).   The main way to become more “findable” is to get lots and lots of links pointing to your blog.  You can start out asking friends and family members to link to you.  Then you might go out and find related blogs and see if they’ll let you “guest post” in exchange for a link to your site.  You can also look up “article marketing” for more ideas on how to get links. That’s all I have time to mention in this article, but I hope I’ve inspired you to make some money from your reading habit.  If nothing else, you could end up making enough to pay for a few new books every month!

Birth of a Civil War Era Novel

From Mark Grisham: I never was what you might call a model student in high school. My focus was not where it should have been, as is the case with most teenage boys. History was the only subject that came close to appealing to me. I have always had a passion for the Civil War especially. Not so much the politics or the causes, but the armies and soldiers that fought bravely for those four horrible years. When I settled down, after thoroughly enjoying my college years, I began reading more and more about the war. Not just about the armies though, but about the civilians that endured the hardships back home coupled with the loss of so many loved ones. The horrors of a battle and its aftermath really hit home when I began to read the soldiers’ diaries and letters sent back home to their families. I tried to imagine what it would be like to live in that era. To have to leave a wife and children alone on a farm, while I marched off, not sure if I would ever see them again. I tried to understand why so many southern boys, most of whom never owned a slave, would fight to protect the institution of slavery. Were they brainwashed by unscrupulous southern politicians who convinced them that the Federal government wanted to free the slaves so they could live as equals with the white folks? Were they really so racist that they thought the black race to be inferior to them? It seems hard to comprehend that so many young men would leave everything they had and risk their lives to protect slavery. What was it then? What made these men give the ultimate sacrifice for the Confederacy? Not being alive in that time frame makes this question difficult to answer. I can only speculate from what I have read. My opinion is that many of these young men were convinced that they were fighting in the second American Revolutionary War. To them, the Federal government in Washington had assumed the role that King George of England did in the first Revolutionary War. That they were defending their homeland from the dreaded Yankee invaders, who were coming to take over the southland. When Abraham Lincoln called for seventy five thousand volunteers to put down the rebellion, after Fort Sumter was bombed, this belief became more prevalent. Maybe that is where the answer lies. Many believed that the Constitution was worded with the phrase “sovereign states” for a reason. That each state had its own legislative, judicial and executive branches as a way to govern themselves. Whatever their reason to fight was, they fought and died with the belief that they were protecting their families and possessions. The odd reality was, that even if they were fighting for “state’s rights,” they were fighting to preserve slavery. Many southerners will tell you that the war was fought over “state’s rights,” but these rights meant slavery would have continued if the south had won the war. Who knows how long it would have lasted? One would hope that the Confederacy would have eventually freed the slaves, but no one will ever know what would have happened. Just my opinion, that’s all.

How To Write And Self-Publish Your Own Book

Have you ever wanted to publish your own book? I thought this was the last thing that I would ever be able to do. But it was not as hard as I thought. Well, I did learn the hard way, but you can learn from my mistakes and self-publish your own books. I’ve had so many people ask me about this that I thought I’m going to write an article on it! If you’re a writer with AC, then you already have many articles that you have published already. So, in the strictest sense, you are already a publisher. If you have always wanted to publish a book and pass on your writings to your family or for posterity’s sake, then self-publishing is the way. It doesn’t matter if you have written poetry or Haiku’s, you can still publish your own book. I used the old fashioned printing press to publish my own book. But what I know now, I would do differently, and here’s where you can learn from my mistakes. I am in the process of writing my 4th book but this one is going to be in the C.S. Lewis style of fiction with a message of morality. It is decidedly out of character for me, but I’m branching out. I normally write Christian theological books since I’ve been in education and a Sunday school teacher for years. And as a father and grandfather, I’ve learned a few things…including things from my own children and grandchildren. But me, write a book!? Never in a million years…or so had I thought. But I have learned to never say never. So many have encouraged me in my writing that I’ve decided to branch out into a different genre but whatever you love or have a passion for is usually the best thing to write about. I love history so I use what my passions or interests are in. I also love Biblical theology and human compassion stories. If there is something your really know a lot about, then you must obviously have a passion for it, so write about it. Perhaps you already have dozens or hundreds of articles that you could use and condense into one document. I’ll tell you the best document in the business to do this with and its absolutely free. I have investigated dozens of publishers. I got prices estimates from Crossbooks.com, Random House, Outskirts Press, Publishers.org, Harper Collins, MacMillan, and dozens of others and I have discovered that the minimum costs were several thousand dollars up to 40 to 50 thousand dollars. I thought there must be a better way. And I believe that I have found it. When I published my first book, I did the editing, grammar and spell checking, proof reading, and even did the liner notes and introduction. I had 120 books published in my small Kansas town of Belle Plaine, Kansas at the local printer. This printer does phone books, cook books and others so I thought, why not use them. I had it done perfect bound, glossy finish, and in paperback with about 80 pages. My cost was $828.48 for 100 copies. They gave me 20 extras and printed some for themselves, including giving the local newspaper copies. This small town had its first published author. Me, a small time author with a big time project. It took me, from start to finish, about 6 months in all. But I did all the editing, proofing, page set ups, etc. I wish I had known then, what I know now about a certain document that lets you create your interior file for a book. Its all contained in one document and then you can export it into a PDF to download to self-publishers and send via email as an attachment. I have written over a hundred articles and I started categorizing them into chapters. What I ended up with was 12 chapters in all. My first book was called “Blind Chance or Intelligent Design?, Empirical Methodologies and the Bible“. Since I know that 3 out of every 4 graduating High School or college-bound Christians leave the “faith once delivered”, I wanted to keep my former Sunday school students grounded in the faith. So I wrote a book about empirical scientific, biological, archeological, paleontology, mathematical, historical, etc. book about evidence for creation and for Jesus’ existence being a fact, as well as convincing evidence for His resurrection. I pledged to donate 10% to missions work and 10% to local churches and the remainder for setting up a homeless shelter in Sumner County, Kansas, which has no homeless center or shelter. There are over 6,000 (est.) homeless people in this county. My plan was and still is, to use part of the proceeds to open a shelter for the many people; families, single people and children who live under bridges, in cars, in (who knows where else?). I’m a member of the First Baptist Church in Belle Plaine, KS and would love to get started in the process of opening a shelter in our severely underserved county of Sumner, just south of Wichita, KS. My passion is to help homeless people break the poverty cycle, secure a GED and to clothe, feed and house the homeless. My first book was “Blind Chance or Intelligent Design, Empirical Methodologies and the Bible” and it was done on the printing press. But then I discovered self-publishing and had it published through lulu.com, which is owned by Google. I then wrote book number two, “Do Babies Go To Heaven?, Why Does God Allow Suffering?” And finally, I wrote my last and 3rd book, “Teaching Children the Gospel, How To Raise Godly Children“. I had all three of these books published by Google’s lulu.com and they are a publish on-demand book. That is, when someone orders one, they print it and mail it. I made them as inexpensive paperbacks as possible so most everyone could afford one. I began as a freelance writer and I [...]
